Unfortunately 3 famous Japanese movie directors Miyazaki, Oshii, and Kitano lost prize of "Leone d'Oro" at the 65th Venice International Film Festival.
All 3 people won other prizes but I forgot the names because I can not remember correct spell of these prizes....sorry.
Therefore, today, I explain my opinion about 2 animation directors.
I don't watch Kitano's work so don't describe about it, by the way I'm not into Kitano's movie any more.(I hate them because they are very cheap.)
Anyway, "The Sky Crawlers" is a good animation but target audience of this movie is very small. I think the people who fit to watch this movie are around 10 to around 20 years old, because over 30 years old people might think this movie would be green or wet behind the ears.
In Venice, the number of audience who watched "The Sky Crawlers" were 70% of sheets of the theater, additionally some people got out from the theater before movie's end,(This movie has a short important scene after ending-song) so Oshii worried about it little.
Getting out from the theatre before end is a correct reaction for this movie.
One news paper said "Venice doesn't need two cartoons from Japan".
Oshii glowed little with creation of this movie but this work is not enough for contentment of mature people or child.I watched "Tachiguishi Retsuden (立ち喰い師列伝)" on TV that was created by Oshii before "The Sky Crawlers" three months ago, it was so awful to see so I didn't continue to see all this movie to the end.
Foreign people sometimes give applause to Oshii's work, but they are attracted but tricked by showy action/battle scenes, theme of Oshii's work is not so high nor elegant.
However, we can find a good point of Oshii that he selects and educates many good staff and leave some important parts of movie to their hands. Therefore if Oshii dies, some young creators rise instead of him.
On the other hand Miyazaki makes script, continuity, and other many important jobs for his animation, so if Miyazaki dies Ghibli has no successor of him, that is a big problem of Ghibli in near future and some people criticize it severely.
I watched a TV program that was a documentary of Miyazaki's work for "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea", in this program Miyazaki worried and stopped continuity work for few months because he could not imagine the last scene but other parts were already progressing even all the scripts weren't finished because Miyazaki didn't finish yet.
His work is very exceptional because if there is a movie that is starting without completed scripts or continuities this might cause a big failure.
Creation/production style of Ghibli seriously depends on Miyazaki's ability so if he dies while new movie's creation, it would be like Bruce Lee's "Game of Death(死亡遊戯)".
Ghibli's popularity also deeply depends on Miyazaki, so if he died Ghible might be bankruptcy soon.
Miyazaki has strong character so many staff in Ghibli gathering him are very good but very obedient to Miyazaki.
So works of other Ghibli's young directors are not so fine, they are stereotyped and it feels week.
Ghibli needs to educate or give the chances/posts of direct new works to young abilities but it will be very difficult till Miyazaki dies.
I am worrying about Japanese animations near future.
